X-RAY
What is radiography? Radiography refers to diagnostic exams that use x-rays to produce images of the human body. The most basic of the radiography exams is the plain film x-ray. While considered a common diagnostic tool, the x-ray has been called one of the most significant advances in all of medical history, to this day used in most every field of medicine to diagnosis a wide variety of conditions.X-rays themselves are a type of radiant energy, similar to light or radio waves. They are capable of penetrating the body, making it possible to capture pictures of internal structures. As a brief burst of radiation passes through the body, and based on its energy and the composition and density of body tissues, the image is produced on a special x-ray film.
What can I expect during the exam? When you enter the exam room, you will see a patient table with the x-ray equipment above the table. An x-ray technologist will help you get situated and comfortable on the table. As the exam begins, the technologist may ask you to adjust your position in order to capture the desired images. As each image is captured, the technologist will step back from the table, activating the x-ray. The exam is quick and painless.
Will I be exposed to radiation? You will be exposed to a very small amount of radiation during an x-ray. Our technologists are trained to use the minimum amount of radiation to produce the desired images.
How long will the exam take? Most x-ray exams take just a few minutes, but could take longer depending on the area of the body to be x-rayed and the number of films to be generated.
How do I prepare for the exam? No special preparation is required.
How will I receive my results? Following your exam, a radiologist will analyze and interpret the images from your exam and prepare a full report. This report will be sent directly to your physician who will share the results with you. To request a copy of the report, contact your physician’s office.
Will my insurance cover the exam? Minneapolis Radiology contracts with most major health plans and will submit claims for non-contracted plans as a courtesy for our patients.
How do I schedule an appointment? Unlike other imaging exams that require an appointment, Minneapolis Radiology sees patients for x-ray exams without appointments. A physician referral is required. |
