What is a spinal injection?
Spinal injections, or epidural steroid injections (ESI), are used to treat low back pain and leg pain caused by inflammation or irritation of the nerve roots. By delivering steroids directly to the source, patients can experience relief from chronic and severe pain. ESIs can also help identify the source of pain by numbing certain areas of the back. ESIs play an important role in the non-surgical management of low back pain. While the effects of an injection tend to be temporary, providing relief from pain for one week up to one year, an ESI can be very beneficial for patients during an episode of severe back pain and provide sufficient pain relief to allow patients to progress with their rehabilitation program. What can I expect during the exam?
ESIs are performed with the use of fluoroscopy for precise placement of the injection. The use of a contrast agent enhances visualization of the area and is usually administered intravenously. As the exam begins, a nurse and highly trained technologist will help you get situated and comfortable on the table, explain the procedure, and answer any questions you may have. The procedure typically takes between 15 and 30 minutes. During the exam, you will lie on your abdomen on the patient table. Prior to the injection, your skin will be numbed with a local anesthetic. In some cases, sedation may be used for patient anxiety and comfort. Fluoroscopy is used to guide the needle to the exact position. Once the needle is in position, the steroid solution is injected. Following the procedure, you may spend some time in the recovery area to be monitored. Return to top
Will I be exposed to radiation?
While fluoroscopy is considered a safe imaging exam, you will be exposed to a small amount of x-ray radiation, similar to that of a chest x-ray. Return to top
How long will the exam take?
Most ESIs are performed in 15 to 30 minutes. However, you should allow approximately one hour for the entire exam, including preparation and recovery time. Return to top
How do I prepare for the exam?
ESIs require no special preparation.
