PREPS FOR ULTRASOUND EXAMS

Listed below are the preps that your patient will follow for their ultrasound exam at Minneapolis Radiology. We have also included some of the questions and information the scheduler will ask when you call to schedule the patient. If the patient has any questions, please have them call us at (763) 398-4400.

Exam Length Instructions
Abdominal 30 minutes Nothing to eat or drink 8 hours prior to exam.
Aorta 30 minutes Nothing to eat or drink 8 hours prior to exam.
Arterial Doppler 45-60 minutes No prep.
Bladder 30 minutes 4-8 oz. of water 60 minutes prior to exam. DO NOT empty bladder.
Breast 30 minutes No prep. Previous mammography/reports at the time of the exam.
Carotid 60 minutes No prep.
Gallbladder 30 minutes Nothing to eat or drink 8 hours prior to exam.
Hips 30 minutes No prep.
OB - 6-14 weeks 30 minutes No prep.
OB - 15-40 weeks 45 minutes Do not void one hour prior to exam. Encourage fluid intake.
OB - Twins 60 minutes Do not void one hour prior to exam. Encourage fluid intake.
Pelvis & Transvaginal 30 minutes Do not void one hour prior to exam. Encourage fluid intake. For patients less than 18, drink 4-8 oz. of water 60 minutes prior to exam. DO NOT empty bladder.
Pylorus 30 minutes No food or drink 3-4 hours before exam if possible.
Renal/Kidney 30 minutes No prep.
Testicular 30 minutes No prep.
Thyroid 30 minutes No prep.
Venous Doppler Unilateral 45 minutes No prep.
Venous Doppler Bilateral 60 minutes No prep.

Information requested by the scheduler:

 Patient name, date of birth, daytime phone, home phone
 Type of exam, diagnosis, symptoms, r/o
 Ordering doctor

 Any special instructions (i.e., keep patient, call results, send films/copies with patient)

 Does patient has a follow-up appointment with the ordering doctor or a specialist after their exam or in the near future?
 Does the patient have previous exams done of the same area? If so, where and when?
